GDevelop Programming

In our GDevelop course, students learn to program by building something they care about: their own video game. GDevelop is a free, open-source game engine that works with visual events instead of typed code, so beginners can see the logic of a program from the very first class.

The course is part of our Technology & Digital Skills programs and goes hand in hand with Serious Game Design, where students use GDevelop to turn their game ideas into playable digital games.

What Students Learn

  • Programming concepts. Events, conditions, actions and variables: the building blocks behind every game and app.
  • Building a real game. Platforms, scores, levels and challenges, added step by step.
  • Problem solving and planning. Working out why something does not work, fixing it and testing again.
  • Story and world building. Characters, rules and worlds that make a game worth playing.

From Players to Creators

Our students discover how games work on the inside, not only how to play them. The skills they build along the way carry over directly to careers in design, coding and other tech pathways.

And programming helps at school too. As one student told us: “I now understand maths better and it was much more fun and interesting too.”

Programming at Summer Camp

Programming is also a big part of our Serious Game Design Summer Camp. For three weeks, students spend seven hours a day, three days a week, learning how games are made, from animation to programming. In the fourth week they come together for a Game Jam, where each group creates its own board and digital games.
