What is EduMais?

Striving for a better future

EduMais fights against education inequality in one of the world’s most unequal cities, Rio de Janeiro.

We equip underprivileged young people in the Pavão-Pavãozinho, Cantagalo, and Tabajaras favelas with the 21st-century skills they need to thrive. These include learning and innovation skills, digital literacy, and career and life skills. Each one is unique in the way it empowers students, but they all share one thing in common: they are essential in the internet age.

Our programs help students build their own path out of urban and digital poverty.

Using Positive Discipline and social and emotional learning, we also support them in working through the trauma of growing up in communities marked by drugs and violence.

Become a donor, volunteer, partner, or fundraiser for EduMais, and let’s right the wrong of unequal opportunity together.

"I loved the programming course. It was really cool to make our own game and learn things we haven't done in maths class yet. I now understand maths better and it was much more fun and interesting too"

Our Programs

Changing lives

English

As part of their curriculum, students of Solar Meninos de Luz school receive English lessons from EduMais. Fast-paced and dynamic, these classes focus on their English speaking skills.

Serious Game Design

This program empowers students to develop programming, creativity, and digital skills while exploring marketing and art as they design their first board and digital games.

Entrepreneurship

Final-year high-school students propose a project to address a need in the community. They then develop and present their business plans, in English, during the school year.

Enter the Labor Market

Leaving school and entering the ‘adult-world’ can be nerve-racking. We therefore prepare final year students for their next steps with our ‘Enter the Labor Market’-course. They learn necessary skills, to successfully market themselves.

Summer Camp

Our January Summer Camp in Serious Game Design and English combines fun and learning. Students play games to understand game dynamics, explore animation and coding, practice English, enjoy arts, and crafts, sports, and music.

Exchange

Selected students are given the life-changing opportunity to attend YMCA Camp Hazen in the United States. This includes a home stay with a local family – the trip rapidly develops the student’s English and life-skills.

Our Values

What drives us

volunteer-rio-de-janeiro

Love

We love equipping underprivileged young people in the Pãvao-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo communities with the skills to achieve their full potential. With unconditional love, they can learn, grow and have hope for the future. Indeed, they discover just how capable they are!

education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world

Empowerment

We empower at-risk young people by increasing their access to education. As well as academic development, our programs focus on the students’ social and emotional learning. By surrounding them with attention and support, we shape their character and prepare them for the future.

Commitment

We are committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and adolescents in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. Our dedicated volunteers are trained to create a safe place of exploration, experimentation, and learning where these young people can feel connected and valued.

Compassion

We care about the young people we work with. Unfortunately, growing up in difficult circumstances can have a profound effect on them and their behaviour. Following Positive Discipline’s mantra of “firm but kind,” we aim to develop them into responsible members of the community.

Encouragement

We encourage children and teenagers to learn about their strengths and to become the best versions of themselves, regardless of the circumstances they live in. By fostering a caring and supportive environment, we motivate them to develop curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.

Respect

We listen to the disadvantaged young people we work with because every child deserves to be treated with dignity and integrity. We instill the democratic principles of respect and equality in all our programs. When their voices are heard, young people feel a sense of belonging and significance.
